Business Background on How To Become A Successful Entrepreneur

I decided to take the plunge and all the risks that go with it, and I started a small importing and distribution business in 1995/1996. My firm imports and distributes paper, printing products and equipment, medical supplies, galenicals/chemicals and textile materials. M&M Distributors employs two full time, 4 seasonal employees and my husband and I primarily manage the assets. My market is the private sector and government. The use of computer technology has helped to make the company more efficient in terms of quick communication and response time to orders or inquiries. With the support of my husband and family, I have been able to establish and maintain an extensive network of customers to reach our market.

In the first few years the challenges involved how to use formal scientific and management processes to bring about innovation. We had to blend this with what we developed as a series of accidental innovation. This means that we recognized an opportunity where different entities and government agencies could perform better if they had rapid delivery of inventory, as they needed it and at competitive cost. (Efficiency and competitive cost is key) This combination reduced their tied up investment in large inventories. This became our success and we have been at it since then and looking for other accidental innovations so to speak.

My husband has always been supportive as a husband and as a business partner. My husband admires my passion and that I am always looking for, or creating new opportunities and pushing the boundaries. He thinks that I am a risk taker. Our funds are our own resources and from our business turnover.

Personal Bio

My name is Yvette Anne Mazariegos born on June 3rd, 1968 in Chetumal Quintana Roo, Mexico. I have Belizean Nationality and I reside in Belmopan. I graduated from The University College of Belize with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. I am married to Roberto Mazariegos Hutvelco who is an Electrical Engineer and we have two sons, Roberto and Diego. My mother is Anabella Mahung who is originally from Corozal and my father is Cirilo Mahung who is originally from Punta Gorda.

We are one of the original settlers of Belmopan when it started in the 70’s. Belmopan has grown since the days when the land behind the British High commission was a jungle. In fact we saw when they were building the British/Mexican Embassies and the British High Commission.

My paternal grandfather is probably the first Chinese to come to Belize. I think that my Asian ancestry must be strong in my DNA because I was born an entrepreneur with a strong desire pushing me forward to start a business. Even as a child I used to come up with some ideas on how to convince my friends and neighborhood kids to buy my slightly used toys, comic books and chips! So you could say I’m now an expert on how to become a successful entrepreneur!
